A lesson in Politics - 2016

Posted By: Akbar on 11-11-2016 | 04:48:27Category: Political Videos, News

Trumps surprising upset of Hillary is a case study that we should look at when talking politics, and how it is very much relevant to our country. No Trump did not win because of the Jewish lobby, or some CIA conspiracy. Enough with those ridiculous conspiracy theories. It is hard to know what millions of people are thinking and how they will vote. There was a heavy anti-establishment mood in the U.S. People will vote for a literal donkey over a establishment candidate. Trump was an outsider, a wildcard, who people perceived as authentic. Hillary was the establishment candidate. Though she was great on policy side of things, she represented the elites of Washington, corporations, Banks, and a typical politician.

This is very much relevant to Pakistan. People do not like establishment. In Pakistan, establishment is the army or top civil bureaucracy. This does not mean that people hate our soldiers, or the job armed forces do to protect the country. But they despise military running our foreign policy, or dictating civilian government, or directly ruling through a martial law. Any politician who is perceived to be close to the military establishment will loose miserably. Now I know PTI supporters will hate me for saying this.

Right now there is only one politician who is perceived by the public in cahoots with the establishment, and it is not Nawaz Sharif, or Zardari, or Bilawal. In fact when news of civil military divide leaks into papers, it helps PMLN, not hurt them. When Zardari says "Hum eent se eent baja dein gay," you may not like it, but he is voicing the sentiments of millions of Pakistanis. So for Imran to succeed and bring real change, he must distance himself from the establishment and be the voice of the people. You cannot have former Musharraf minister as your top financier. You cannot say things Musharraf was better than Nawaz. You cannot pretend to be anti-India and U.S when in opposition, but buddy with them when in power. You must fight for your beliefs, and fight hard but within your constitutional limits and rights.
